WORCESTER - One man is in critical condition and another is charged with bashing him over the head with a metal pipe during an early morning fight Saturday at Winfield and Mason streets.

Cornelius Brown, 19, of 46 Maywood St., Apt. 1, was arraigned in Central District Court yesterday on charges he struck a 19-year-old city man in the head during a fight shortly before 4 a.m. Saturday.

The victim was in a car with friends when another group of men came out onto the road and one man allegedly threw a glass bottle at the car, police spokesman Sgt. Kerry F. Hazelhurst said.

The victim and his friends got out of the car and the two groups began to fight at Winfield and Mason streets.

"During the altercation this individual (the victim) was hit with what police believe was a metal pipe," the sergeant said.

When police arrived they found the victim in the middle of the road surrounded by friends. The group of attackers ran off before police arrived.

The victim was bleeding from the head and was immediately taken to a city hospital, where he remained in critical condition yesterday...
