16 displaced in 2-alarm fire.

WORCESTER - A two-alarm fire heavily damaged a multifamily house at 2 Bedford Ave. last night.

Sixteen people were displaced, including nine children.

Fire shot out from the windows at the rear of the house around 9:45 p.m. in the tightly packed neighborhood on Grafton Hill. Firefighters were initially concerned about exposure to the house next door, but quickly brought the flames under control.

Neighbor Patrick Lamptey said he returned home and smelled smoke, but didn't see the flames until he looked through a window in his nearby Pilgrim Avenue home.

Mr. Lamptey said he then saw two police cruisers pull up, and saw two officers run into the house to help people get out. Firefighters were right behind them, he said.
