HOLDEN -- Here's the second half of our look back at the sports highlights from Holden TelegramTowns 2013:

In July we noted the hard-working play of the Wachusett American Legion baseball team, on the diamond almost every evening in a grueling summer schedule of 26 games. The Wombats were 10-7 entering a crucial swing of July games.

In late July, the 50th annual Fred Warren 5.5 mile Road Race kicked off, beginning and finishing in Holden Center. "This one is going to be special,'' said Mr. Warren, the race's founder. Karla Steele won the women's division, and Christopher Favulli was the men's champion.

As August rolled in, we wrote about Debbi and Clifton Hunt, who celebrated their 40th wedding anniversary and the 40th anniversary of their beloved Holiday Acres Equestrian Center on Main Street in Rutland.

Also in Rutland, there was excitement in the air at Bedrock Golf Club when 62-year-old Mary Gale climbed to the final bracket of the annual Women's Golf Association Mass. Amateur Championship at Framingham Country Club.

Coinciding with the 10th anniversary of the Holden Pool on Salisbury Street, Holden Recreation Director Denise Morano provided valuable information about its features and programs.

Also in August, we stopped in to survey the preparations in Paxton for the fall season of the Anna Maria College football team, with its new uniforms and head coach Vincent Sinagra. "We have over 100 players on the team,'' Sinagra said.

The special 100 number also was the theme as September began when we highlighted the Princeton Labor Day Tennis Tournament, which entered its next 100 years after celebrating its centennial in 2012.

Another Labor Day event we noted was the Four-Ball championship at Holden Hills Country Club won by the team of Matt Leger and Adam Rubin.

In mid-September, we reported on Wachusett Regional High School senior Colleen Sands' exciting trip to London as part of Team USA in the Age Group World Championship Triathlon.

As the fall sports season got underway, we previewed the talented WRHS volleyball team coached by Jen Burton and David Gentleman's girls' soccer team captained by seniors Joanna Roberts, Riley Wilde and Emma Deneault.

Kerry Berry's Wachusett field hockey team grabbed the Holden Towns sports headlines in October, winning seven of its opening 11 games.
