Tantara Corp. awarded Navy job

WORCESTER - Tantara Corp. has won a first-of-its-kind Navy contract specifically for woman-owned small businesses.

The Woman-Owned Small Business Set Aside contract is for site preparation and demolition work on Naval installations from New York to Maine, according to a news release from Naval Facilities Engineering Command Mid-Atlantic.

The $4 million contract comes after the U.S. Small Business Administration put mechanisms in place to increase federal contracting opportunities for women-owned businesses.

"The program is another tool to help achieve the statutory goal that 5 percent of federal contracting dollars go to women-owned small businesses," said Joe McGrenra, NAVFAC Mid-Atlantic's deputy for small business, in the release.

Tantara, owned by Dawn Dearborn and based at 54 Mason St., is a contractor that handles construction, demolition, site remediation and other services.

PC-PLUS changes name, becomes AKUITY

AUBURN - PC-PLUS Technologies has changed its name to AKUITY Technologies, effective today.

When the company was founded in 1988 its primary focus was to design, build and ship personal computers to businesses and customers throughout New England, according to a company news release.

But, President Steven Cariglio said the company, at 1 Westec Drive, has been asked to provide assistance "with networking, storage, virtualization, security, voice-over IP and managed services, and we grew and changed PC-PLUS to meet their needs."

The new name better represents the vision of the company, he said.

"We selected AKUITY Technologies because its definition embodies many of the qualities that we are proud of. It defines our focus on improving our client's productivity and efficiency so that they can succeed in their industry," Mr. Cariglio said.

NLRB postpones union notice requirement

WASHINGTON, D.C. - The National Labor Relations Board has again postponed a requirement that employers post a workplace notice informing employees of their right to form a union.

The NLRB announced that the rule, which was to be implemented on Jan. 31, be postponed to April 30. The new date was established at the request of a federal court in Washington, D.C., that is hearing a legal challenge from the National Association of Manufacturers, which objects to the posting requirement.
