Evergreen Solar files suit

MARLBORO - Evergreen Solar Inc. has filed suit against Barclays Plc. and Lehman Brothers Holdings Inc., alleging Lehman didn't have title to Evergreen shares loaned to the now-bankrupt investment banking company in July. Evergreen Solar is seeking the return of 30.9 million shares, including 12.2 million shares Barclays received from Lehman after its bankruptcy filing, Evergreen said yesterday. The 30.9 million shares were loaned to Lehman as part of a $375 million financing Evergreen completed in July. The suit was filed in the U.S. Bankruptcy Court for the Southern District Court of New York. (Bloomberg News)

VMware 3Q profit up 29%

VMware Inc. said third-quarter profit increased 29 percent. Net income climbed to $83.3 million, or 21 cents a share, from $64.7 million, or 18 cents, a year earlier, the Palo Alto, Calif.-based company said in a statement. Revenue rose 32 percent to $472.1 million, topping the $463.6 million average of estimates compiled by Bloomberg. VMware is partially owned by EMC Corp. of Hopkinton. (Bloomberg News)

Waters posts 3Q gain

MILFORD - Waters Corp., a maker of equipment used by drug developers and other industrial customers, posted net income of $71.5 million, or 71 cents a share, for the third quarter ended Sept 27. At the same time last year, Waters reported net income of $53.3 million, or 52 cents per share. Waters said third-quarter revenue of $386.3 million was up 10 percent over the same time last year.
