FITCHBURG - Fitchburg State College expects to lay off 10 employees in the new fiscal year, and officials are girding for the possibility of more funding cuts in fiscal 2011.

Michael Shanley, executive assistant to the president for external affairs, said the cuts will come from administrative and clerical ranks and not from faculty. The college has about 520 employees on campus. Mr. Shanley said several more positions will remain vacant as the college works to contain costs.

"If it wasn't for the stimulus money, we would have lost $4.5 million in state money this year and things would be a lot more alarming," Mr. Shanley said.
