Four hurt in crash; teen to be charged

WESTBORO - Four people were hurt in an early morning crash yesterday on Ruggles Street when a car slammed into a tree.

One person in the car, identified by police only as a 16-year-old Mount Pleasant Street resident, was removed by firefighters using extrication tools. The boy, of Westboro, was trapped in the front passenger side and was then flown by medical helicopter to UMass Memorial Medical Center - University Campus in Worcester with internal and leg injuries.

The driver of the car, identified by police as Vaughn Sewell, 18, of 74 Powder Hill Way, was treated at the scene for leg and arm injuries and will be summoned to Westboro District Court on drunken driving and other charges.

Police were called to the area of 92 Ruggles St. about 4:10 a.m. to investigate a one-car crash. Officer Tyson Delong's investigation showed the 2000 Toyota was driving south on Ruggles Street when the driver swerved to avoid a small tree that was partially in the road.

"Due to the high rate of speed the operator lost control of the vehicle and struck a tree on the opposite side of the road in front of 92 Ruggles St.," police said in a news release. "The tree in the roadway had been chewed at the base by beavers from a nearby stream."

Mr. Sewell was taken by ambulance to UMass Memorial Medical Center - University Campus along with two girls who were in the rear seats. The two girls, identified as Alina Bayborodin, 17, of 14 Westminster Way, Westboro, and a 15-year-old Thomas Newton Drive resident, had minor injuries, according to police.

Mr. Sewell will be summoned to court on charges of driving under the influence of alcohol causing serious bodily injury, driving without a license, speeding, failure to keep within marked lanes and...
