Alleged armed robber, accomplice arrested

WORCESTER - A man carrying a long black gun allegedly robbed the Honey Farms convenience store at 237 Cambridge St. early yesterday morning. He was arrested a short time later with his alleged accomplice, the driver of the getaway car, who was also arrested for armed robbery.

According to police, Richard Lunt, 32, of 12 Clapp St., entered the store holding a gun around 12:30 yesterday morning and demanded the clerk open the cash drawer; police were alerted to the robbery in progress.

The suspect walked around the counter and allegedly took cash and several scratch tickets and ran off to Southgate Street.

A police dispatcher broadcast the suspect's description over police radios.

Minutes later, state troopers who were on patrol in the area, saw a white Chevrolet Avalanche driving erratically as it came out of Hacker Street and onto Cambridge Street at a high rate of speed, according to police. The troopers stopped the vehicle at Southbridge and Crompton streets and relayed information that a passenger in the vehicle fit the description of the suspect. The store clerk was brought to the vehicle, and police said he was able to identify the suspect as the person who robbed the store.

Mr. Lunt was arrested and charged with armed robbery. He also had three outstanding active default arrest warrants for motor vehicle offenses.

Mark Moriarty, 23, of 38 Northside Road, Charlton, was the driver of the car, and he was also placed under arrest and charged with armed robbery.

The Worcester Police Crime Scene Unit was called to investigate and found a black pellet gun, cash and a pair of latex rubber gloves in the car.

Mr. Moriarty and Mr. Lunt were scheduled to be arraigned at Central District Court Friday.
