IAABO dishes out yearly hoops awards

The International Association of Approved Basketball Officials (IAABO) Board 26 announced its award winners for the winter season at its awards banquet on Friday. Bruce Edwards won the James and John Dorsey Award for loyalty and contribution to Board 26, Andy Cesnickas earned the Joe Lane Award for commitment to local youth and sports and Denis O'Connell was honored with the Loftus-Pickett Award for significant contribution to basketball. The Auburn High girls' basketball team won the Ann Ash Zelesky Sportsmanship Award and the Abby Kelley boys' basketball team won the Cervini-Hardy Sportsmanship Award. The board also handed out Service Awards to Dinny Lojko (60 years), George Reidy (50 years), Ron Chapdelaine, Bill Helm, Tom Kirklauskas and John "Max'' McCarthy (45 years), Jim Herrion and Allan Marzilli (40 years), John Deignan and Stanley Hilton (35 years), Art Bellows, Brian Dougal, Geoff Earls, Roy Ferreira, Tim Gallagher, Rich LeBlanc and John Palermo (30 years), Mike Goldstein, Don Jensen, Ed Oleson and Ron Parker (25 years), Joe Bellino, Mike Carey, Jim Marine and Bill McGuirk (20 years), and Nick Alarie, Craig Dottin, Andy Murphy, Dennis Piel and Jim Riley (15 years).

Alabama fires coach Grant after six seasons

Alabama has fired men's basketball coach Anthony Grant, who led the Crimson Tide to just one NCAA Tournament berth in six seasons amid growing discontent among fans. Athletic director Bill Battle said in a statement that he informed Grant of his decision on Sunday, three days after the Tide's loss to Florida in the opening round of the Southeastern Conference Tournament. Alabama finished 18-14 and struggled to an 8-10 record in SEC games a year after Grant's first losing season as a head coach. Battle gave him a reprieve after a 13-19 record in 2013-14, saying he felt it wasn't a program adrift and predicting ''better things ahead.''
