Judge Mathis stresses service at Becker graduation.

WORCESTER - TV personality and philanthropist Judge Greg Mathis told the 335 students graduating from Becker College on Saturday that it will be their service to their fellow man that makes them relevant to the world, not how much money they make or how much fun they have. "What you want is money and meaning," Judge Mathis said.

In his remarks on Saturday, Judge Mathis, Becker College's speaker for the college's 225th commencement, told graduates the challenges they will face will make them stronger.

"If the door to opportunity closes on your face," Judge Mathis said, "knock it down." Judge Mathis, who received one of two honorary degrees yesterday, grew up as a troubled youth on the streets of the toughest housing projects in Detroit. He went on to have a distinguished career as a judge, television host and philanthropist. He is dedicated to offering youths second chances, and spreading his message of social empowerment. "Never let them hold you back," Judge Mathis said.

City Manager Michael V. O'Brien received the other honorary degree awarded by the college.

Becker, whose theme was "celebrating a History of Changing Lives, conferred degrees on 335 graduates yesterday. Graduates' names were called by Elizabeth V. Fuller, vice president of academic affairs and dean of the college, and graduates stopped for a moment to be recognized before making their way across the stage at the Hanover Theatre.

Cecelia Pierce of Sutton, one of three grandmothers who earned degrees from Becker College, skipped across the stage to the delight and cheers of the crowd. Another graduate, Luis M. Sanchez, also enjoyed his moment on stage. He had a big smile as he pumped his hand in the air. The packed crowd of parents and spouses, families and friends was enthusiastic throughout the commencement. After degrees were conferred, three special awards were presented.

Theresa Boulier received the Samuel May Award, which recognizes a graduate who has shown scholastic achievement, excellence in character and leadership.

The President's Award recognizing a graduate who has shown outstanding school spirit was presented to Brooke Cote. Dean's Awards are given to the graduates with the highest grade point averages in the bachelor's and associate's degree programs. Jennifer Wallace earned the Dean's Award for the bachelor's program, and Rachel Carter earned the Dean's Award for the associate's program. Johanna LeClair, president of the college's alumni...
