NORTHBRIDGE - The following people were recognized by the Knights of Columbus Mumford Council 365 at its recent awards/recognition night:

Knight of the Year: Theodore Decoteau.

Honorary Life Members: Normand Armstrong, Roland Guilbeault and Donald Webster.

Honorary Members: George Murray, Louis Desruisseaux, Richard Auger and Robert Jacques.

50 Years of Membership and Service: Richard Rodgers and Peter Trottier.

Longest Membership and Service: Joseph P. Bouvier, 71 years.

Knights of the Quarter for 2009: Donald Bruneau, Paul Charbonneau, David Frank and Richard Green.

SkillsUSA team visits Statehouse

The SkillsUSA team from Blackstone Valley Regional Vocational Technical High School was recently welcomed to the Statehouse by state Sen. Richard T. Moore, D-Uxbridge, and Senate President Therese Murray, D-Plymouth.

Blackstone Valley Tech's project this year, "Together We CAN (Cancer Awareness Network)," raises awareness about the risks and prevention of cancer through school projects, community outreach and volunteer work. The team members have spent much of their time during the school year collecting books for Boston Children's Hospital, selling cancer awareness bracelets, organizing school projects and putting together care packages for patients at the Dana-Farber/Brigham and Women's Cancer Center in Milford.

Students win bookmark contest

NORTHBRIDGE - To mark Mental Health Awareness Month, Alternatives Unlimited in Whitinsville recently sponsored a bookmark design contest for fifth- and sixth-graders from schools within the agency's Central Massachusetts service area. The students were asked to incorporate one of three slogans - mind your mind, peace of mind, or feed your mind - into their bookmark designs.

Winning students in the Blackstone Valley area were: Shannon McDermott and Matthew Papineau of the A.F. Maloney School in Blackstone; Cali Bloem and Victoria Afonso of Northbridge Middle School; and Corine Shannon and Krysten Boyer of Whitin Middle School, Uxbridge. The winners each received a $50 savings bond and had their names and their school's names printed on the bookmarks.
