Blue Knights conquer on ice; Lunenburg High hits winning streak.

LUNENBURG - Late last year, something clicked for the Lunenburg High School hockey team. Before the good things happened, the Blue Knights had won only two games and had lost four, including a Christmas tournament final game at the Wallace Civic Center.

Then came 2010. It was like one of those New Year's resolutions that you stick to. The Blue Knights' skating got better, the defense locked up their zone, and the pucks flew into the opposing teams' net. One terrific unbeaten streak was under way.

Last week, into mid-February, as the Blue Knights passed the 50th day of the year, they still had not left the ice as losers after a game.

On Feb. 10, Lunenburg's unbeaten streak climbed to 15 with a 5-3 win over Nashoba in a game the Knights had to rally from a 3-0 deficit. They left winners again.

Indeed, entering the postseason playoffs, Lunenburg was the hottest high school hockey team in the area.

"Ever since our Christmas tournament, when we lost to Oakmont, we've been on a roll," said Lunenburg coach Eric Short.

Last year, the Blue Knights qualified for the postseason tournament and defeated Northbridge in the first round before bowing out in the Central Mass. Division 3A semifinal game.

This season has been extra special. Lunenburg, which co-opts with skaters from Ayer High School, upped its overall season points total to 30 with the win over Nashoba. In that game, senior first-line forward Mike DeFazio scored two goals.

"We won or tied all our games in January and we haven't lost in February," Short said last week, commenting on his team's remarkable string.

Short, who witnessed the "Miracle on Ice" Winter Olympics game as a young boy at Lake Placid in 1980, added, "Considering where we were with our record at one point earlier in the season, and looking at where we are now, I'm just so very proud of these players and our program.
