FITCHBURG - While Lunenburg coach Steve Kyajohnian felt confident his girls' team would capture the Division 2 title at the Central Mass. Indoor Track and Field Championships with only the mile relay remaining, Oakmont boys' coach Dan Dufour knew his squad needed a win and some help if it wanted to catch leader Auburn.

The Blue Knights ended Bromfield girls' eight-year reign with 71 points. Uxbridge was second, 15 points behind Lunenburg and three ahead of Bromfield.

Meanwhile, Oakmont won the mile relay to edge Auburn, 46-45, for its first CMass title since 1982. Sutton was four points back in third.

"I'm so happy for the girls," Kyajohnian said. "It's good for the seniors because they got the runner-up plaque three years in a row. Everybody stayed healthy for the most part this week. Everybody did their job today and then some. It's nice the seniors can go out as district champions."

"We've been waiting nine years for this," senior captain Kelly Ulf said, referring to Lunenburg's last title.

Kyajohnian, whose team won four straight CMass crowns from 1998 to 2001, lavished praise on shot put and high jump coach Steve Boone. Lunenburg scored 11 points in both the high jump and shot put.

Junior Brittany Green easily won the shot put with a throw of 32 feet, 7-1/2 inches. Sophomore Jennifer Markham won the 2 mile in 11:51.35, and Ulf tied Uxbridge's Emily Cahill for second in the high jump with a personal best 5-2.

"We're always strong in the field events," Ulf said. "(Kyajohnian) always puts a lot of pressure on us."

Senior captain Kate Albertini had been sick most of the week, but came in third in the 1,000 (season-best 3:21.42) and helped Lunenburg take second in the mile relay.

"(The championship) puts us back on the map," Albertini said. "I'd rather be sick today and healthy for the state meet. I was more concerned about our team doing well than my individual performance today."
