CHARLOTTE, NC Mrs. Davis, 92, of Charlotte, NC and East Woodstock, CT, passed away Tuesday, May 24, 2011 in Charlotte.

The daughter of the late Samuel McDowell McNutt and Mary Linda Walton, she was born July 28, 1918 in Amelia County, VA. After graduating from Rice High School, she completed a secretarial program with financial assistance from her elder sister, the late Mary McNutt Gates and then worked for a time in the Accounts Receivable Department of the Westinghouse Hotel Supply company in Richmond, VA until moving to Southbridge, MA and joining American Optical Company. After a stint as full-time mother and homemaker, she became the first Faculty Secretary for Nichols College in Dudley, MA where she worked for many years.

Lucy was an accomplished quilter and gardener and loved to cook and entertain. She was a charter member of the New England Quilt Museum and assisted with a project to inventory heritage quilts held by many New England families. Her own work is held and treasured by many friends and relatives, where in some cases, more than one generation has a baby quilt she designed, pieced and quilted. She was also very generous with cuttings and bulbs from her garden, and her day lilies are scattered throughout New England and into North Carolina. Lucy was a very active volunteer and served on many committees for her church, and worked on projects for the Woodstock Historical Society. She viewed her community, particularly the church, as her family and was a frequent visitor to those people in the community whom she thought might like some home cooked food or a friendly chat.
