Fifty Years Ago

Members of the Clinton Rotary Club were each given $5, which they had to invest and at least double the original amount in three months. The object of the "five dollar derby" was to raise money for a project, which will benefit the youth of the town. Edward F. Gibbons was the chairman of the committee; he said prizes would be given to those who raised the most money.

Fourteen members of Troop 8 Senior Girl Scouts from Clinton enjoyed a weekend at Cedar Hill in Waltham. Skating parties were held during the weekend. The girls also enjoyed marshmallow roasts and group singing around the fireplace.

Clinton Police Chief Michael Kelly reported to the Board of Selectman that $883.23 was stolen during the month and $81.37 was recovered. Eleven male residents were arrested compared to eight females, while 11 male non-residents and one female were arrested by local police men.

Forty Years Ago

The Women's Fellowship of the First Congregational Church held its monthly meeting. Devotions were led by Audrey Moore, who was also in charge of the evening program, including a travelogue and slides. Refreshments were provided by Betty Bent and Jeanette Lafley.

Joseph Turcotte was elected president of the Clinton Turners at the annual meeting held at the Turner Hall. Other officers elected were Carl Strunz, vice president, Max Spanier, treasurer, William Braunhardt, recording secretary, George Center, corresponding secretary, Herman Pittroff, auditor, and Ralph Schreiner, financial secretary.

At Victory in Clinton, meats ranged from 48 cents to $1.78 a pound. Hi C juice drinks were four for $1, and salad dressing was 38 cents and Purex bleach was 39 cents a gallon.

Thirty Years Ago

Lancaster and Groton, in a bid for a joint block grant from the Department of Housing and Urban Development, were facing a deadline for the pre-application. About one dozen Lancaster residents turned out to hear Richard J. Santner of the Montachusett Regional Planning Commission explain the joint application process.

The Clinton Youth Hockey Association sponsored a Family Italian Night in Turner Hall. Tickets were available from any member of the association. The menu consisted of rigatoni and meatballs, salad, bread, and homemade pastries. Raffles were conducted during the evening for both adults and children.
