Quabbin 28, Quaboag 20: Freshman quarterback Ryan Malkowski threw two touchdown passes to Thomas Gates and scored on a 2-yard run in double overtime to help the host Panthers (1-0) take down the Cougars (0-1) in Barre.

Quabbin led, 14-0, at halftime, with senior running back Chase Lohr scoring on a 40-yard run in the first quarter and Gates hauling in a 55-yard TD pass from Malkowski in the second quarter.

Quaboag answered with an 18-yard touchdown run by Erik McCormick in the third quarter, then forced overtime when Nate Rucchi broke loose for a 63-yard touchdown run with a minute left in the fourth quarter, then pounded in the conversion run.

Valley Tech 14, Ashland 13: Senior Ben Reiffarth rushed for 189 yards on 18 carries and a pair of touchdowns, including an 80-yard third-quarter run, and Kevin Barthelmes' PAT to lift the host Beavers over the Clockers in the opener for both teams.

Ashland QB Mitch Porter ran for a touchdown and threw for another, a 10-yard pass to Justin Byrnes late in the fourth quarter, but Devin Kempster blocked the PAT to preserve the lead -- and the win -- for the Beavers. Kempster also had a late interception, while Jake Tancrede and Barthelmes each had nine tackles.

Boys' soccer

Bay Path 5, Southbridge 0: Damian Mattey, Tom Cole, Troy Nicolas, Tyler Suprenant and Chris Walne scored, and Josh Pecore (3 saves) had the shutout as the Minutemen opened their season under home lights for the first time. The Pioneers are 0-2.

Blackstone-Millville 9, Oxford 1: Reis McMann scored three goals and Ryan Olson scored two as the visiting Chargers (1-1) defeated the Pirates (0-2). Eric Eisner, Philip Hatjopolous, Nathan Spas and Jack Quitzau also tallied for BMR. Tyler McCarthy scored for Oxford.

Bartlett 5, Millbury 1: Senior Jacob Simonis scored three goals, and Dylan Murphy had a goal and an assist to lead the host Indians (2-0). Jacob Meloche added Bartlett's other goal. Liam O'Shea tallied for Millbury (1-1).

Holy Name 1, Quabbin 1: Riley Brooks scored with 8:14 left in the first half to tie it for visiting Quabbin (0-0-2). James Trottier's goal gave the Naps (0-0-1) the lead 11:38 into the game.

Leominster 4, North 1: Sophomores Nahuel Algibay and Emmanuel Apau each scored twice as the visiting Blue Devils prevailed at Foley Stadium in the opener for both teams. Senior James Bowhile had the Polar Bears' goal.

Lunenburg 4, St. Bernard's 1: Toby Craig had a goal and an assist, and Tristan Deschenes, Mike Tenie and Sonxai Thirakoun also scored as the host Blue Knights opened with a win. Marcus Babineau tallied for the Bernardians.

St. John's 4, Marlboro 0: Byron Morataya and Kyle Archambault scored in the first half and Garret Kutzko and Adam French added second-half goals as the host Pioneers shut out the Panthers in the opener for both teams.
