Gomes, Bogaerts honored

World Series standout Jonny Gomes and rookie infielder Xander Bogaerts are the 2013 winners of the Jackie Jensen Hustle Award and Rick Montalbano Award as Red Sox' Minor League Player of the Year, respectively. Gomes will be on hand to receive his plaque at the 75th annual awards dinner of the Boston Chapter, BaseBall Writers Assn. of America. The event is set for 6 p.m. on Thursday, January 23 at The Westin Copley Place Hotel in Boston. Tickets are on sale for $200 each or $2,000 for a table of 10 and can be purchased online by credit card at The Sports Museum website or by calling (617) 624-1231. Boston won 10 of the 11 games Gomes started in left field during the playoffs. In regular-season action, he hit .247 with 13 home runs and 52 RBIs. Gomes also had four pinch home runs and complete a rare unassisted double play from left field. Bogaerts played at three different levels in 2013. He began the year at Double-A Portland before being promoted to Pawtucket. Bogaerts was called up to Boston on Aug. 19 and got into 11 postseason games, making every start at third base in the World Series.

The Chicago White Sox and veteran left-handed reliever Scott Downs have agreed to terms on a one-year, $4 million contract. The 37-year-old Downs was 4-4 with a 2.49 ERA, 37 strikeouts and 26 holds in 68 appearances last season between the Angels and Atlanta. In 12 major league seasons, he is 38-36 with a 3.48 ERA, 550 strikeouts and 166 holds in 564 games (50 starts).
