Lawn mower injures youth

SHREWSBURY - A 15-year-old boy suffered serious injuries to his head from a running lawn mower yesterday.

Police Sgt. Kevin Anderson said police received a 911 call at 2:58 p.m. reporting that a boy had received head injuries from a lawn mower in a wooded area off Walnut Street. Mr. Anderson said the teen was found by two people, but he declined to elaborate.

He said the youth was taken to UMass Memorial Medical Center - University Campus in Worcester, where he was undergoing surgery. "The paramedics did a tremendous job providing him medical attention," the sergeant said.

Phillipston man charged in stabbing

GARDNER - A Phillipston man turned himself in to police after allegedly stabbing an unidentified man early yesterday morning.

Matthew G. Anderholm, 20, of 20 Willis Road, Phillipston, was charged with assault and battery with a dangerous weapon. He was released on bail and is to be arraigned this week in Gardner District Court.

Police said they recovered the knife used in the stabbing, which reportedly happened outside a Greenwood Street residence at 12:38 a.m. The victim had a laceration to the abdomen and was taken to Heywood Hospital. Police said the injuries did not appear to be life-threatening.

Marlboro mosquito spraying tonight

MARLBORO - The Board of Health is reminding residents and businesses in the Locke Drive area that two re-applications of mosquito spraying will be done. The sprayings began Friday night and are to be completed by late tonight, according to the Central Massachusetts Mosquito Control Project.

The areas to be sprayed are bounded by Berlin Road, Bigelow, Boundary, Robin Hill and Elm streets and Interstate 495. The area was first sprayed last week after mosquitoes in a pool tested positive for West Nile virus. The pool was near where a dead blue jay with the virus was found.

Fire damages home in Marlboro

MARLBORO - Firefighters battled a fire last night at a home at 31 Vine St.

Deputy Chief Ron Ayotte said firefighters were called to the two-story wood-frame house at 6:25 p.m. He said three people in the house got out safely. The fire was deemed extinguished at 8:30 p.m. Deputy Chief Ayotte said the cause of the fire was accidental, and he estimated damages at $65,000 to $95,000.
