HOLDEN/WEST BOYLSTON Co Robert L. Himmer, 75, of Holden, passed away at home on Monday, Dec. 22.

Born in Clinton and raised in Sterling, Mr. Himmer was the son of Albert and Eva (Pesso) Himmer and lived many years in West Boylston and Holden. He attended Wachusett Regional High School in Holden.

In 1957, he married the love of his life, Mary Ann Flagg of West Boylston, and together they raised their four children in West Boylston and Holden and later ventured to own and operate several successful businesses. In 1960, he and his wife started Himmer Limousine and Taxi Service, in West Boylston, and, in 1965, purchased their first ambulance, a 1957 Cadillac, and established Himmer Ambulance Service out of their home on Bunker Parkway. They expanded their ambulance service to Holden and subsequently operated another ambulance service in Worcester under the name of Worcester Ambulance Service. In 1972, they merged their two ambulance operations and became Worcester Himmer Ambulance. With over 15 ambulances and numerous wheelchair vans to their credit, the couple sold their ambulance service in 1980.

After enjoying several years of retirement in Melbourne, Fla., they once again got the entrepreneurial bug and, in 1988, opened Nation Wide Wheelchair Company in Melbourne, providing a variety of wheelchairs, mechanical lifts and accessories.
