Robert G. Pontius, M.D., 90WORCESTER - Robert Gilmore Pontius, M.D., age 90, died peacefully on April 12, 2014, in Worcester MA. He is survived by his former wife, Mary T. Pontius; five children and their spouses: Helen (David) King,Diane (Hassan) Pontius, Louisa (Dennis) Wunder, Joan (Filip) Pontius and Gil Pontius; eleven grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; and two siblings: Jean Rathbone and Jo Pogue. He is predeceased by his sister Mary Ellen Pontius and stepbrother William Meyer.Robert was born 1923 in Palmerton, Pennsylvania to Ellen Kate Gross Pontius and Rev. Paul Reid Pontius. Following the death of his mother, and his father's remarriage to Eleanor Walthour Meyer, Robert and his family moved to Greensburg, Pennsylvania. Robert had attended Mercersburg Academy, Haverford College, and as part of the Navy's V12 program, Swarthmore College and the University of Pennsylvania School of Medicine. He served as a physician in the Navy during the Korean War. Surgical training included positions at Baylor College of Medicine and Harvard Medical School.
