Selectmen OK seeking housing upgrade grant.

MILLBURY - The town will be applying for a Community Development Block Grant to provide loans to low- to moderate-income families for home improvements.

Town Planner Laurie Connors has enlisted the help of the Central Massachusetts Regional Planning Commission in applying for the complicated and highly competitive grant. Representatives from CMRPC will administer the grant and the application process.

The town last received a Community Development Block Grant in the late 1990s, which funded downtown streetscape improvements.

On Tuesday night, Ms. Connors asked for - and received - the selectmen's support in applying for the grant.

With the town's housing plan recently accepted by the state, Ms. Connors said the grant would best be used for housing rehabilitation, which is one of the goals contained within that housing plan.

"This grant could benefit low- to moderate-income homeowners - people who own their own homes, but just haven't been able to keep up with the home improvements," Ms. Connors said.

Tim Hansen, of CMRPC, told selectmen Tuesday night that the application process is highly competitive.
