18-wheeler crashes on Southbridge St.

WORCESTER - A tractor-trailer loaded with scrap metal overturned on Southbridge Street near Kendig Street about 8:30 yesterday morning and slammed into two utility poles.

John Boudreau was sitting near the front window of his home on Southbridge Street having a cigarette when he saw the truck come around the corner onto Southbridge Street.

He said two of the big rig's rear tires lifted off the ground, and a few seconds later it crashed over onto its side and struck two utility poles.

The trailer spilled its load into the intersection, effectively shutting off access to Kendig Street.

The accident also forced the closing of a section of Southbridge Street across from National Grid at 939 Southbridge St. into early afternoon. The driver was not injured and stood at the scene for hours as crews worked to offload the scrap metal.

"It was loud," Mr. Boudreau said. "It shook the house. It was like a mini-earthquake."
