SOFTBALL

Milford 6, Shrewsbury 0: Shannon Smith struck out 20, a career-high for a seven-inning game, and allowed just two hits while going 3 for 4 to lead the visiting Scarlet Hawks (1-0, 1-0 Mid-Wach A) past the Colonials (0-1, 0-1).

Smith struck out 22 in a 13-inning win over St. Peter-Marian last year. Rachel Levine went 2 for 4 for Milford, while Lizzie Stallone had an RBI triple.

AMSA 25, North Brookfield 12: The visiting Eagles broke an 11-11 tie by scoring 14 runs in the eighth inning in the season opener for both teams.

Narragansett 18, Bromfield 2: Sophomore Julie Melanson pitched a six-hitter in her first varsity start, and junior Kimmie Morris went 2 for 2 with a three-run double, three runs and three stolen bases to spark the host Warriors (1-0).

Rebekah Raymond was 2 for 3 with two runs and Melanson 1 for 2 with an RBI for Narragansett.

Brittany Lee went 2 for 2 with a two-run single in the third inning for the Trojans (0-1).

Maynard 15, Lunenburg 5: The visiting Tigers (1-0) scored 13 runs over the final four innings to open with a Mid-Wach C victory over the Blue Knights (0-1).

Lucy Duchard was 5 for 5 with four runs and two RBIs to pace Maynard. Lunenburg's Erin Stern was 2 for 3 with two RBIs.

Nipmuc 12, Burncoat 2: Jaclyn Cortese pitched a four-hitter and was 3 for 4 with two doubles and two RBIs to lead the visiting Warriors (1-0).

Ashley Smits went 2 for 3 for the Patriots (1-1).

BASEBALL

Burncoat 6, Nipmuc 1: Sophomore Matt Howard went 2 for 4 and earned the victory on the mound, and senior Ryan O'Connor had a two-run single in the sixth inning as the host Patriots improved to 2-0.

Senior catcher Tom Paine had two hits for the Warriors in their opener.

Douglas 7, Grafton 1: Eddie Peladeau went 3 for 4 with a double, two RBIs and two runs, and Max Karsok drove in two runs to spark a five-run fourth inning as the host Tigers won the opener for both teams.

David Chance went 3 for 3 for the Indians.

Leicester 15, South 3: Nick Wilson (three hits) and Ryan Petrone (two) each drove in three runs for the host Wolverines in the opener for both teams. Connor Marc-Aurele went 2 for 4 with two RBIs.

Chris Echegary had one of four hits for the Colonels.

Maynard 6, Lunenburg 0: Mike Marshall hit a solo home run, and allowed only one hit and struck out 11 in six innings, to lift the visiting Tigers in the opener for both teams.
